Disciple

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Matt. 10:24)—a learner, adherent, or follower of a teacher. The New Testament speaks of disciples of John the Baptist, the Twelve and wider circle of Jesus’ followers, and, in Acts, the whole community of believers. A disciple receives teaching in order to embody it: “Learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart” (Matt. 11:29). Jesus also warns that a disciple is not above the teacher, so following him includes sharing his pattern of service and suffering.
