(servant of the king) (Jer. 38:7–13) — an Ethiopian eunuch, at whose intercession the prophet Jeremiah was released from the pit into which he had been cast by order of King Zedekiah. As a reward for this noble deed, he himself was saved from death at the capture of Jerusalem. It is likely that it is precisely this man to whom the Lord and Savior alludes in the Gospel of Matthew, in the words: “He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward” (Matt. 10:41).
