Dorcas, or Tabitha

(Acts 9:36)—a disciple of Christ at Joppa, known for diligence and works of mercy. Her illness and death deeply grieved the Christians there and gave Peter occasion, through her miraculous restoration, to bring many to faith in Christ. When Peter entered the house, widows stood weeping and showed him the tunics and garments Dorcas had made. He sent everyone out, prayed, and said to the body, “Tabitha, arise.” She opened her eyes, saw Peter, and sat up. Taking her by the hand, he raised her and presented her alive to the saints and widows. The source holds up her story as an enduring image of Christian women’s active charity.
