(Acts 9:43) - animal hides were made into shoes, sandals, girdles, parchment, and many household articles. A distinct class of craftsmen, the tanners, carried on this work. Rabbinic teaching regarded their trade as unclean; because of the offensive smell, tanneries were usually placed outside towns beside rivers or the sea. Peter lodged by the sea with a tanner named Simon (Acts 9:43).
