(Josh 10:12-13; Gen 37:9), also called the lesser light (Gen 1:16) - the earth's satellite, shining by light borrowed from the sun. The source gives its mean distance from earth as about 51,800 geographical miles. Through a good telescope its surface appears covered with mountains, valleys, and chasms of many forms. The same side continually faces earth because the moon turns once upon its axis during each orbit.
