(Hebrew she’ol) (Gen. 37:35; Num. 16:30, 33; Ps. 15 [16]:10, and elsewhere), by its derivation from the Greek [as given in the source, though the word is Hebrew], signifies a place deprived of light. In Christian teaching, under this name is understood the spiritual prison — that is, the state of spirits estranged by sin from the sight of God and from the light and blessedness bound up with it (Jude 1:6).
