(God is great, great God) (Num. 32:3, 37; Isa. 15:4, and elsewhere) — a Canaanite city near Heshbon, or Hesbon, thought to be the present-day El-Al — fairly extensive ruins on a hill, about half an hour’s journey from Heshbon to the northeast, on the eastern side of the Jordan. The city was rebuilt and occupied by the tribe of Reuben. From the summit of the hill on which these ruins stand, an extensive view opens out over the plain and over the whole southern region of Belka. In the days of the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah, the city was under the rule of the Moabites (Jer. 48:34).
