Ataroth

(crowns, wreaths) — the name of several cities and localities on the eastern and western sides of the Jordan, mentioned in Holy Scripture: a) (Num. 32:34) a city in the tribe of Gad, built by the Gadites; b) (Num. 32:35) a city of the same tribe, otherwise Atroth-shophan. Its location is given in the Book of Numbers as between Aroer and Jazer; c) (Josh. 16:7) a city on the borders of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, probably, as is thought, the same place as Ataroth-addar, where there is now a large settlement, Atara; d) Eusebius and Jerome mention, besides these, another Ataroth, in the tribe of Ephraim, four miles north of Sebaste. Robinson supposes this to be the same place as the aforementioned settlement Atara, seen along the road from Jerusalem to Bethel.
