Fish
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Gen. 1:21; John 21:6 and elsewhere)—a principal food in Egypt. Fish were caught in great numbers, especially in the Nile, salted, and stored. Egyptian monuments depict fishing with hooks, nets, and spears. Isaiah threatens Egypt: “The fishers also shall mourn, and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish” (Isa. 19:8); the source connects verse 10 with artificial fishponds common in Egypt.
