Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Mark 15:42; Luke 23:54; John 19:14; Matt. 27:62; Jdt. 8:6) (Preparation)—the day before the Sabbath, devoted among the Jews to preparing for the Sabbath. According to the source, preparations began about the ninth hour, or three in the afternoon, and included preparing food (Ex. 16:5–23), cleaning and setting out festal garments, setting the table, and lighting lamps; ordinary work then ceased.
