(Exod. 33:11). In Holy Scripture this word occurs quite often; it is, however, frequently used merely as an ordinary form of greeting, and not at all in the sense of true, genuine love and friendship. For example, in the parable of the wedding feast, to which all who happened to be found at the crossroads were invited, the king, the host of the feast, said to one of those who had come to the feast: “Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?” (Matt. 22:12). The Savior, at the traitorous kiss in the garden of Gethsemane, answered Judas: “Friend, wherefore art thou come?” (Matt. 26:50).
