Gihon
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
— this is the name given to a spring, or streams, near Jerusalem, at which Solomon was anointed king (1 Kings 1:33, 38, 39) and proclaimed king. From the details of the narrative it is evident that Gihon lay below Jerusalem: “…unto Gihon, and are come up from thence…” These details agree with later accounts of Gihon, where it is said that they flowed through a ravine (2 Chron. 32:30). Afterward King Hezekiah, in order to hide the streams from the enemy, ordered it covered over with earth above, and connected with the city below by underground channels (2 Chron. 32:30).
