Goren-atad, or Abel-mizraim

(threshing floor, or floor of Atad) (Gen. 50:10, 11) — the word “Abel” here means “mourning,” and the whole phrase means “the mourning of Egypt,” or “the mourning of the Egyptians.” The reason for this name is given in the first chapter of Genesis [50th chapter] (v. 11). This place was formerly called “the threshing floor of Atad.” Jerome testifies that in his time it was called Beth-hoglah (Josh. 15:6; 18:19), which he placed near Jericho. It appears, however, that this locality was located closer to Hebron, though its exact location remains unknown to this day.
