Gopher Wood

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Gen. 6:14)—the material from which Noah was commanded to build the ark. The Hebrew term gopher occurs only here, so the species cannot be identified with certainty. Cypress, cedar, pine, and other resinous or durable woods have been proposed, but “gopher wood” is best retained as a transliteration rather than turned into a confident botanical claim.
