Hophra (Apries)
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Jer. 44:30)—pharaoh of Egypt, reigning in the sixth century BC and contemporary with Nebuchadnezzar. King Zedekiah sought Egyptian aid; an Egyptian force temporarily drew the Chaldeans away from Jerusalem, but they returned and captured the city (Jer. 37:5–10; Ezek. 17:11–21). Judean refugees later went to Egypt against Jeremiah’s warning. Jeremiah declared that Hophra would be given into the hands of his enemies, as Zedekiah had been given to Nebuchadnezzar. Greek sources call this pharaoh Apries.
