Horeb

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(dry, desolate; Exod. 3:1; 17:6; 33:6; Deut. 1:2, 6; 1 Kings 8:9)—the mountain or mountain region in the Sinai wilderness where God appeared to Moses in the burning bush and where water came from the rock. Scripture associates the giving of the Law both with Horeb and with Sinai (Exod. 19; Deut. 4:10–15; 5:2). The names may designate the broader mountain region and a particular peak within it, but the biblical usage does not permit a completely certain topographical distinction. See Moses; Sinai.
