The Second Temple was built after the exile on the site of Solomon’s Temple. Ezra records Cyrus’s authorization and the grief of older worshipers who remembered the former house (Ezra 3:12–13; 6:3). It was less magnificent and lacked the ark and several other sacred objects associated with the First Temple. Later Jewish testimony describes a stone in the Most Holy Place where the ark had stood, and the Holy Place had an incense altar, a lampstand, and a table for the Bread of the Presence.
