Joppa

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(beautiful) (Josh 19:46; Jonah 1:3) - now called Jaffa, one of the oldest cities of Asia, built upon a sandy height and originally allotted to Dan. It stands on the northwestern shore of the Mediterranean between Caesarea and Gaza, thirty-seven English miles from Jerusalem. Already in Solomon's reign it served as Jerusalem's harbor, washed by the sea on three sides. It remained the chief seaport of Judea in the source's day and had once possessed great commercial importance (2 Chr 2:16; Ezra 3:7; Jonah 1:3).
