(2 Sam. 21:19)—named as the Bethlehemite father of Elhanan in a difficult text concerning the slaying of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was like a weaver’s beam. The parallel passage says that Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath (1 Chron. 20:5). The differences in the father’s name and the object of the verb are commonly explained as textual corruption in Samuel; Chronicles preserves the more coherent form.
