(stream, brook) (Gen 4:20) - son of Lamech and Adah, and father of those who dwell in tents with livestock. Abel was the first keeper of sheep; Jabal, however, was probably the first to possess various kinds of herds, with which he moved from place to place, thus beginning the nomadic pastoral life; see Nomads.
