(heap of witness; the source calls it an Arabic word equivalent to Gilead) (Gen 31:45-49) - a heap of stones erected by Jacob's kinsmen as a memorial of the sincerity and permanence of his covenant with his father-in-law Laban (Gen 31:47-48). The heap was also called Mizpah, meaning 'to watch' or 'to observe.' 'The LORD watch between me and thee,' Laban said to Jacob, 'when we are absent one from another'; and there they swore by the name of God that neither would pass beyond the heap with evil intent against the other (Gen 31:44-55).
