(beloved of God) (2 Sam 12:25) - the name given through the prophet Nathan to Solomon, David's second son by Bathsheba, as a sign that the Lord had forgiven David's sin. The child was first named Solomon, meaning peaceful, and afterward Jedidiah because of the Lord's special mercy toward him. The source suggests that both names contained a symbolic indication of the Messiah. The custom of giving an infant a second name in addition to the one bestowed immediately after birth has continued in the East even to recent times, as in Nur ad-Din, Salah ad-Din (Saladin), and others.
