Ramoth-mizpeh

(height of Mizpeh) (Josh. 13:26)—the same as Ramoth-gilead and Mizpeh of Gilead, an ancient city of Gilead in the territory of Gad. Laban and Jacob made peace in this region (Gen. 31:49), and Jephthah lived there in the days of the Judges. At the conquest of the Promised Land the city was given to the Levites and appointed as a city of refuge for an innocent manslayer (Deut. 4:41–43; Josh. 20:8; 21:38). Ahab received his mortal wound there in battle with the Syrians (1 Kings 22), and Jehu was anointed king of Israel there (2 Kings 9:1). The source identifies it with es-Salt at the foot of the hills of Gilead, then the principal town of Belka.
