Jesus

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

- the Greek form of the Hebrew name Jeshua, shortened from Jehoshua, meaning the help of the LORD, or Savior. The name often occurs among the Hebrews and is applied in Scripture to various persons, but above all to the Lord Jesus Christ, the author of our salvation. God appointed this name for the divine Child through the angel's message to Joseph in a dream: 'She shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins' (Matt 1:21). See Christ.
