(daughter of the oath) (2 Sam. 11:3) — daughter of Eliam, and wife of Uriah the Hittite. She is also called the daughter of Ammiel (1 Chron. 3:5). David committed adultery with her, and, as punishment for it, the child born to her on the seventh day died (2 Sam. 12:18). Afterward David married her, and she bore him Solomon (2 Sam. 12:24; Matt. 1:6) and three more sons (1 Chron. 3:5). Her influence on David was, it seems, very great, so that she prompted him to proclaim her elder son Solomon king (1 Kings 1:34). She afterward played the chief part in bringing to nothing Adonijah’s attempt to seize David’s throne (1 Kings 1:11–28).
