Jubilee

(“a prolonged trumpet blast”) (Lev. 25:8-17; Num. 36:4)—the fiftieth year in Israel’s law. As every seventh year was a sabbatical year, so the year following seven sabbatical cycles—seven times seven years—was consecrated as the Jubilee. On the Day of Atonement a trumpet was to sound throughout the land, liberty was to be proclaimed to all its inhabitants, each person was to return to his ancestral property and clan, and ordinary sowing, reaping, and harvesting were to cease. The people were to eat what the land produced of itself (Lev. 25:8-12).
