(Jer. 38:1)—a son of Shelemiah and one of King Zedekiah’s officials. He and other officials heard Jeremiah proclaim that Jerusalem would fall to the king of Babylon: those who remained in the city would die by sword, famine, and pestilence, while those who went out to the Chaldeans would live. Because Zedekiah, installed by Nebuchadnezzar, was attempting resistance, the officials charged that Jeremiah was weakening the hands of the soldiers and seeking the people’s harm rather than welfare. The king yielded to them, and Jeremiah was lowered into the cistern of Malchiah in the court of the guard (Jer. 38:1-6). See Jeremiah and Zedekiah.
