Knife, knives

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Josh. 5:2 and others)—among the Hebrews some knives were often made of sharp stones (Ex. 4:25); metal knives were also in use (Prov. 27:17), employed in the slaughtering of sacrificial victims (Gen. 22:10, Judg. 19:29). At the table the Hebrews did not use knives, because meat was eaten already cut up, and bread was broken by hand. In Holy Scripture mention is also made of razors (Num. 6:5) and of penknives, or scribes’ knives (Jer. 36:23).
