(bird) (Exod. 2:21)—the wife of Moses and a daughter of the priest of Midian. When one of her sons had not been circumcised at the proper time, “the LORD met him, and sought to kill him” (Exod. 4:24). Zipporah immediately performed the circumcision with a flint, touched his feet with the foreskin, and cried, “Surely a bloody husband art thou to me” (Exod. 4:25–26). The source takes the threatened person to be Moses, though the pronoun in the biblical narrative is ambiguous. Zipporah and her children were probably then sent back to her father; Moses met them again when Israel reached Rephidim during the wilderness journey. How long she lived afterward is unknown.
