Leaf

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Isa. 64:6)—healthy green leaves signify life and flourishing, while withered or driven leaves signify frailty, judgment, or decline. The righteous person is like a tree planted by streams whose leaf does not wither (Ps. 1:3), but Isaiah confesses, “We all fade like a leaf” (Isa. 64:6). Job’s question, “Will you frighten a driven leaf?” expresses human weakness before God (Job 13:25). Revelation completes the image with the tree of life whose leaves are for the healing of the nations (Rev. 22:2).
