Leah Lea

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(established, or weary) (Gen 29:16) - Laban's elder daughter and one of Jacob's wives. Genesis 29:18-23 describes how Laban deceived Jacob at the wedding by substituting Leah for Rachel, whose beauty had captured his nephew's heart. The deception required Jacob to serve seven additional years for Rachel, whom he finally married. He loved Rachel more than Leah, whose eyes were weak and who was less beautiful; but the Lord blessed Leah's humility with special fruitfulness, and she bore six sons and the daughter Dinah.
