. Scripture often uses plants figuratively. The children of God-fearing parents, developing in the freshness of youth, are compared with flourishing plants (Ps. 128:3; 144:12). The godly person is like a tree planted by streams of water, bringing forth fruit in season and retaining its leaf (Ps. 1:1–3). Pagan customs and morals are compared with foreign plantings or slips from a strange vine not planted by God (Isa. 17:10–11). In the New Testament the Lord says, “Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up” (Matt. 15:13).
