Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(Job 13:27)—a wooden restraint in which a prisoner’s feet, and sometimes hands or neck, were secured. The jailer at Philippi put Paul and Silas in the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks (Acts 16:24). Job uses the image to lament that God has restricted his movement and watched every path.
