(hearing)—the name of several persons. (1) (Gen. 29:33 and elsewhere) Jacob’s second son by Leah. Because Simeon took part in the cruel slaughter of the men of Shechem, Jacob foretold that his descendants would be divided and scattered (Gen. 49:5–7); they consequently received an inheritance consisting of towns within Judah’s territory (Josh. 19:1–9). (2) (1 Chron. 4:20) a man of Judah and his sons. (3) (Ezra 10:31) one of the sons of Harim who put away a foreign wife in the days of Ezra. (4) (1 Macc. 2:1) an ancestor of Mattathias and great-grandfather of Judas Maccabaeus.
