Libya and Libyans

(inhabitants of a sun-scorched land) (Acts 2:10; Jer 46:9) - in antiquity the Greeks sometimes used Libya for all Africa, but properly it meant only the part west of Egypt on the southern Mediterranean coast. Geographers commonly called it Cyrenaican Libya after its chief city, Cyrene. In the Old Testament it was known as Lubim or Lehabim, from which the source supposes its later name derived. Among those who witnessed the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Acts 2:10 names Libyans together with Egyptians.
