Pamphylia

(1 Macc. 15:23; Acts 2:10 and elsewhere)—a rather mountainous province of Asia Minor lying north of the Mediterranean Sea, between Cilicia, Lycia, and Pisidia. On Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, Pamphylians together with other peoples heard the apostles proclaim the wonderful works of God in their native language (Acts 2:10). On his way to Pisidian Antioch the Apostle Paul visited Perga, one of its cities. In the first Christian centuries Pamphylia was more populous and flourishing than in the source’s day, when the ruins of many cities still remained. The source places it within the Ottoman province of Anatolia and the pashalik of Adalia.
