Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(gift of the Lord) (Acts 1:23, 26) — one of the seventy apostles, chosen by lot and numbered among the twelve apostles in place of Judas the betrayer. History has preserved no details of his life for us. One thing is certain: that he was a disciple of the Lord from the beginning of His public ministry to mankind until the resurrection itself. One tradition says of him that he preached in Judea and was there stoned to death. Another tradition testifies that after Judea he preached the gospel in Ethiopia, where he ended his life as a martyr. His memory is kept on the 9th day of August.
