Thaddaeus
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Mark 3:18)—one of the Twelve Apostles. Matthew 10:3 also gives Thaddaeus, with “Lebbaeus” in some manuscripts. Luke calls him Judas of James (Luke 6:16; Acts 1:13), and John refers to “Judas, not Iscariot” (John 14:22). These names have traditionally been understood to refer to the same apostle, Judas or Jude; the precise meaning of Luke’s “of James” may be “son of” or “brother of.”
