(2 Chr 26:7) — a people who inhabited the Arabian desert, south of Palestine, in the neighborhood of Mount Seir. They were subdued by Uzziah, king of Judah; they were occupied partly with caravan trade, and partly with cattle-raising and the cultivation of various plantations. In rocky Arabia, south of the Dead Sea, there still exists to this day a fortified town called Ma’an, or Maon, whose inhabitants carry on a considerable trade in provisioning travelers between Damascus and Mecca and Medina.
