(1 Macc. 2:1, 2 Macc. 13:14)—the ancestral city of the Maccabees, according to Eusebius, near Diospolis, or Lydda, on the road from Jerusalem to Joppa. Here lived the priest Mattathias, who began the uprising against Antiochus Epiphanes, king of Syria, and here he himself was buried with his sons (1 Macc. 2:70). At present, ruins of the village El-Midieh are found here, lying two hours’ journey from Lydda.
