(1 Kings 10:22; 2 Chron. 9:21)—a domestic bird of the pheasant family and the order of gallinaceous birds, celebrated for its magnificent plumage. The sapphire-colored feathers glowing upon its neck, back, and wings, together with the iridescent golden and emerald feathers of its train, produce an inimitable play and beauty of color. Peacocks were brought to Solomon from India in his ships together with precious stones, gold, and ivory.
