Monkey, Ape

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(1 Kings 10:22)—four-handed [as printed: quadrumanous] mammal animals, resembling man in bodily structure and physiognomy. Solomon’s fleet, among other products of Ophir, also brought apes. The royal naturalist evidently wished to have for himself several specimens of foreign animals as well, for his scientific researches and observations. These apes are called in the Hebrew text koph or kophim, which shows that the apes were imported from India, or from the island of Ceylon.
