Perez (Pharez)

Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia

(breach; Gen. 38:29; Matt. 1:3)—the twin son of Judah and Tamar and brother of Zerah. His birth supplied the explanation of his name: “What a breach you have made for yourself!” His descendants formed the Perezite clan, and his house became a proverbial image of fruitfulness in the blessing over Ruth and Boaz (Num. 26:20; Ruth 4:12). Perez stands in the genealogy of David and of the Lord Jesus Christ (Ruth 4:18–22; Matt. 1:3; Luke 3:33).
