(Acts 13:13–14)—the chief city of Pamphylia in Asia Minor. Paul visited it after leaving Paphos and again in company with Barnabas, when they preached the word of God there. Perga stood on the banks of the Cestrus River and was important not only commercially but also for its temple of Artemis, or Diana, which stood on a hill near the city and was the site of vile idolatrous festivals. Its ruins remained considerable in the source’s day, five hours from the coastal city of Attalia in the same province. The Turks then called it Eski Kalessi.
