Phoenix (Phoenice)
Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(Acts 27:12)—a harbor on the southern coast of Crete. Because Fair Havens was unsuitable for wintering, the majority aboard Paul’s ship wished to reach Phoenix and spend the winter there. A violent wind prevented them from making the harbor. The wording that describes the harbor’s orientation has been interpreted in more than one way, and its exact identification remains debated.
