(1 Kgs 10:11-12) - a valuable timber growing in the East Indies, Ceylon, and parts of Africa and traded from ancient times. It was imported abundantly from Ophir under Solomon, who made from it supports or stairs in the house of the LORD, as well as harps and psalteries for the singers (2 Chr 9:10-11). The source identifies the biblical wood with eastern sandalwood, prized for its red color, hardness, and excellent polish.
