Archimandrite Nikifor’s Biblical Encyclopedia
(1 Macc. 15:23; Acts 21:1)—a large island in the Levant southwest of Asia Minor, with a city of the same name. The source gives its dimensions as forty English miles long and fifteen wide and notes its ancient schools, flourishing arts and sciences, and the colossal statue traditionally said to have stood 105 feet high. The Colossus stood for fifty-six years before an earthquake destroyed it.
