(Matt. 10:27)—flat roofs were common in the ancient Near East. They were built with a slight slope for drainage and required a parapet to prevent falls (Deut. 22:8). Exterior stairs could permit access without entering the house. Roofs served for sleep in warm weather, conversation, cooling, storage, festival booths, prayer, public announcements, and at times idolatrous worship (1 Sam. 9:25-26; Neh. 8:16; Jer. 19:13; Acts 10:9). Jesus’ command to proclaim “from the housetops” uses their visibility as an image of open declaration.
