Sabbath

—the seventh day of the week, set apart by God as a day of rest. Its name derives from ceasing. Genesis grounds it in God’s rest after creation (Gen. 2:2–3), while the Decalogue commands Israel to remember and sanctify it, giving rest to the household, servants, resident alien, and animals (Exod. 20:8–11; Deut. 5:12–15). The day was reckoned from evening to evening. Ordinary labor and kindling fire were forbidden, and the sanctuary offered an additional sacrifice (Exod. 35:3; Num. 28:9–10).
