—a Hebrew word meaning hosts or armies. It occurs frequently in the Hebrew Old Testament but only twice in the New Testament, in Romans 9:29 and James 5:4. As a divine title it expresses God’s limitless majesty, His dominion over all creation, His omnipotence, and His glory. He is the God of hosts, the Lord of powers, exalted above all; the hosts of angels surround and serve Him, while all nature obeys Him and bears unceasing witness to His power.
